Focus
To further your knowledge of Photoshop and start to learn the basics of retouching through creating a creature of your choosing.
Assignment
This is the first part of a two-part assignment where will be creating a new creature through the collage techniques you’ve learned combined with new retouching techniques you will learn in the next few classes. In the next part of this assignment, you will create a painted environment for your creature to inhabit.
Some things to consider:
- The creature can be something from a myth, work or fiction, fairytale, etc., or can be something of your own creation.
- The creature can be humanoid or more animalistic, the choice is yours.
- When choosing your main image(s) for the project keep in mind you want a large image or images.
- If working with a human face straight on is usually less challenging then three-quarters view. Also, stubble and facial hair can be tricky.
- Remember this project must be in color so don’t choose black and white images.
- Avoid fashion photographs that have already been highly retouched or stylized.
- It’s a good idea to avoid using an image of yourself.
Project requirements
While you will not get any additional points for doing the following, not doing them will result in a loss of points.
- The project should be at least 1080 pixels on its smallest size (bigger is fine).
- The project should be properly named as indicated in the ‘Naming Convention’ section at the top of this page.
- The project should be emailed (rlanciotti@pnca.edu) or turned in via flash drive as a PSD file before class on the due date.
- All layers must be properly named.
- At least 5 layers
- You can use the liquify filter for no more than 20% of your image.
- The project must be in color.
Technical requirements
These are required to show you understand and have used some of the tools and techniques demonstrated in class.
- Your use of the collaging techniques to create your creature.
- Your use of the new retouching tools such as the clone and healing brush.
- Cleanliness of your layers.
- You need to have at least one adjustment layer.
Theory requirements
While your project will show a number more design elements than listed below, these should be the ones you pay special attention to when creating the piece. When shown during critique they should be dominant.
- The unity of the piece. This while the creature can be as imaginative as you’d like it must look as though it is a realistic photograph of that creature, not a collage or illustration.
- Your use of color to create a realistic image (avoid sharp transitions in skin-tone unless it is intentional such as a tiger creature’s stripes on a pattern of scales, etc.)
- Your use of value to create a realistic sense of light and shadow throughout the creature.
- Your use of texture to give the viewer a sense of how the creature would feel if touched.
If you have any questions please ask me in class or email me as soon as possible.
